This may explain the positive effects of GABA-enriched foods in attenuating anxiety and insomnia (Yu et al., 2020), and the correlation between bacterially-derived GABA and/or GAD-system genes in mental health, such as reported for autism (Kang et al., 2018; Averina et al., 2020) and depression (Zheng et al., 2016; Strandwitz et al., 2019; Valles-Colomer et al., 2019). The gene discussed is GAD1; the disease is major depressive disorder.
