SLC11A1 and leprosy: The Nramp1/Slc11a1 gene is associated with the controlling intracellular pathogens such as Mycobacteria, Salmonella and Leishmania. Several studies have reported polymorphisms in Nramp1 which are associated with increased susceptibility to tuberculosis and leprosy (caused by M. leprae) in humans [517–519].
