Curiously, it was shown that UPF1-depleted cells can survive to higher doses of H2O2 in a SLC7A11-dependent manner, suggesting that NMD impairment during stress, and the consequent upregulation of SLC7A11, provides protection to cancer cells against the oxidative damage that may result from the overproduction of ROS [106]. The gene discussed is SLC7A11; the disease is cancer.
