ALMS1 and Alstrom syndrome: ALMS is caused by mutations in the ALMS1 gene [4,5,6,7,8,9,10], which encodes a ubiquitously expressed protein localized to the centrosome and basal bodies of ciliated cells implicated in cytoplasmic microtubular organization, intracellular transport, and cilia assembly or function [11,12,13,14,15].
