The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential benefits of using biomarkers (active MMP-8, total MMP-8, active MMP-9, total MMP-9 and calprotectin) in adjunct with such (potential) risk factors for periodontitis that are easily obtainable by any medical practitioner—namely, gender, age, education level, smoking and body mass index (BMI). This evidence concerns the gene MMP9 and periodontitis.
