Although anti-VEGF therapy is the current mainstay for the treatment of DR and significantly improves vision with less ocular side effects, the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network (DRCR.net) study (Protocol I) reported that two years of anti-VEGF treatment showed ≥3-line improvement in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in only ~29% of DME patients [3].
