In the study, although G. elegans exhibit no significant effect on the lipid concentration in the plasma of piglets, koumine, an indole alkaloid isolated from G. elegans, significantly reduced the levels of triglycerides (TG), cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate carbamoyl transferase (AST) in the serum of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) rats [10] and increased the level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C). This evidence concerns the gene CAD and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
