Studies on ALS primarily come from European populations and within these populations four genes [TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43), fused in sarcoma/translocated liposarcoma (FUS), superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), chromosome 9 open reading frame 72 (C9ORF72)] account for 70% of fALS (Kiernan et al. 2011). The gene discussed is SOD1; the disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
