Lower fat oxidation in patients with diabetes may be associated with an inability to decrease circulating insulin levels, inhibiting lipolysis and leading to a possible increase in the hepatic uptake of fatty acids, together with an increase in GLUT4 recruitment to the cellular membrane and activation of muscle hexokinase, enabling the phosphorylation of glucose and increasing glucose muscle uptake (de Jesus et al., 2019). This evidence concerns the gene SLC2A4 and diabetes mellitus.
