Kalasuramath and colleagues [6] studied 600 working Indian women (18–55 years) and observed that women having mild-to-moderate anemia (Hb > 8 to < 12 g/dL) had a significantly lower VO2max [38.7 ± 6.2 mL∙(kg∙min)− 1)], compared with those without anemia [45.5 ± 5.3 mL∙(kg∙min)− 1; p < 0.05]. The gene discussed is GSTM1; the disease is anemia (phenotype).
