FABP2 and celiac disease: Circulating basal levels measured in healthy individuals reflect the normal epithelial turnover rate and elevated I-FABP levels have been found in plasma and serum in patients with celiac disease, intestinal ischemia, and systemic inflammatory response syndrome suggesting an abnormal epithelial turnover in these conditions (Pelsers et al., 2005; Derikx et al., 2007, 2009; de Haan et al., 2009).
