Genetically induced Nrf2 overexpression in melanoma cells promotes tumor growth and increases antioxidant defense in malignant cells, which can be inhibited by anticancer agent pterostilbene (Pter, a natural dimethoxylated analog of resveratrol) through the downregulation of pituitary production of ACTH, plasma corticosterone, and the glucocorticoid receptor- and Nrf2-dependent antioxidant defense systems in growing melanomas (Benlloch et al., 2016). This evidence concerns the gene POMC and melanoma.
