Since demyelination is one hallmark of MS lesions, the search for targets focused initially on myelin proteins such as myelin basic protein (MBP), proteolipid protein (PLP) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG), which had been shown to be encephalitogenic in the animal model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) (7, 8). The gene discussed is MBP; the disease is experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.
