MetS demonstrates a central role in promoting tissue inflammation in the adipose tissue of the liver, muscles, and pancreas; with concomitant infiltration of macrophages, and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines including Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNFα), Interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL1β, activation of the c-JUN N-terminal kinase (JNK), and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathways (Chawla et al., 2011; Elmarakby and Sullivan, 2012; Grandl and Wolfrum, 2018). Here, TNF is linked to metabolic syndrome.
