Consistent with the expression of brain specific MACF1 isoforms, there is a growing list of MACF1 genetic alterations that have been associated with susceptibility to diverse neuropathologies and particularly psychological disorders such as schizophrenia (Kenny et al., 2014; Wang et al., 2015), autism spectrum disorder (Kenny et al., 2014), and bipolar disorders (Han et al., 2019) as well as neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s (Wang et al., 2017). Here, MACF1 is linked to autism spectrum disorder.
