The formation of a multilayered SAC structure during osteomyelitis is a host-induced mechanism of infection control, which is manipulated by S. aureus with the deployment of several virulence genes including clumping factor A (ClfA), chemotaxis inhibitory protein of staphylococci (CHIPS), and staphylococcal complement inhibitor (SCIN) (51, 52, 60–62). Here, SCIN is linked to osteomyelitis.
