It is suspected that while BDNF is pro-convulsive, it can lead to a more chronic dampening of excitation via activation of neuropeptide Y, desensitisation of TrkB and alterations in chloride conductances, evidence of which is discussed in more detail in the review of BDNF in epilepsy by Iugheti and colleagues (Iughetti et al. 2018).
