In a large community-based study, patients with previously undetected ABI ≤ 0.9 presented higher levels of the MMP-2/MMP-9 ratio compared to non-PAD control subjects (1.4 > ABI > 0.9) [58], and high levels of both gelatinases, MMP-2 and -9, were also reported in diagnosed PAD patients compared to controls [24,34]. Here, MMP2 is linked to peripheral arterial disease.
