The activation of Nrf2 by mutated p53 is associated with poor prognosis in breast cancer patients and includes genes, such as thioredoxin (TRX); in contrast, mutated p53 represses other Nrf2 targets, including heme oxygenase 1 (HMOX1), that can have cytotoxic effects in cancer cells [122].
