With studies showing that HMG-CoA lyase deficiency results in the disruption of redox homeostasis, which induces lipid peroxidation, oxidative damage, and mitochondrial dysfunction [60,61,62,63], this further suggests that oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction are not only involved in AMD pathogenesis, but may be driving dark adaptation impairment. The gene discussed is HMGCL; the disease is age-related macular degeneration.
