Evidence of β-cell destruction via the presence of anti-islet-autoantibodies (which may recognize insulin, Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase 65(GAD65), zinc transporter isoform 8 (ZnT8), or islet cell antigen (ICA512) and the age at which initial autoantibodies were detected are important factors that characterize the “classical” etiological subtype of T1D. Here, GAD2 is linked to type 1 diabetes mellitus.
