The essential role of this cytokine in atherosclerosis and CVDs has been recently highlighted in the Canakinumab Anti-Inflammatory Thrombosis Outcomes Study (CANTOS) trial: treatment with a monoclonal antibody against IL-1β (canakinumab) proved to be protective against cardiovascular dysfunctions in patients with a history of myocardial infarction (MI) and elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) (147).
