The results seem contradictory, as some studies have reported that SCFAs can cause hypertension,105,106 and others have shown that SCFAs can decrease blood pressure.107,108 For instance, studies with Olfr78 null mice present lower blood pressure compared with the wild-type mice.106 On the other hand, FFAR3 KO mice are hypertensive.107 The potential dual effect of both receptors in the regulation of blood pressure has been analyzed by Pluznick et al.
