Previous studies showed that women with preeclampsia had persistent elevated placental HIF-1α levels that enhanced the transcription of genes that encoded soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), soluble endoglin (sEng), and endothelin-1 (ET-1), all known to contribute to preeclampsia11,16–18. The gene discussed is EDN1; the disease is preeclampsia.
