The reduction of PPARα activiation occurred in 20 months old rats, acompanied with accelerated cardiac aging, while treatment with atorvastatin increased PPARα expression and slowed down cardiac aging (including reduced cardiac hypertrophy, collagen deposition, oxidative stress and β-galactosidase activity 53) suggesting the importance of PPARα inhibition in cardiac aging. This evidence concerns the gene PPARA and cardiac hypertrophy.
