Finally, at the clinical and translational significance level, we showed for the first time that in female SLE patients (1) testosterone levels are reduced (Figure 4); (2) testosterone exposure increases the expression of FoxP3 mRNA in Tregs (Figure 7); and (3) that the plasma levels of testosterone positively correlates with FoxP3 mRNA (Figure 7). Here, FOXP3 is linked to systemic lupus erythematosus.
