Although respiratory tract manifestations are the most commonly reported symptoms in COVID-19, emerging data suggest that the gastrointestinal tract and liver might also be affected by SARS-CoV-2, on the basis that gastrointestinal epithelial cells and liver cells express angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the major receptor of SARS-CoV-2 (Qi et al., 2020[31]). This evidence concerns the gene ACE2 and COVID-19.
