Glycocalyx degradation as assessed by increased shedding of Syn-1 and hyaluronic acid has been observed in various pathologic states including sepsis [5, 7, 10–13], hemorrhagic shock [7, 14], acute coronary syndrome [7, 15], volume overload [7], and surgical and traumatic injury [14, 16], which have been associated with poor outcome [17]. The gene discussed is SYN1; the disease is Sepsis.
