Our previous work and that of others have shown that CD133+ HCC CSCs confer resistance to cisplatin, doxorubicin, and 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU) via the preferential expression of AKT/PKB survival pathway proteins.[20, 21] Treatment of PLC8024, MHCC97L, Huh7, SNU182, and SNU475 HCC cells in vitro (Figure 1A) and MHCC97L xenografts intrahepatically in vivo (Figure 1B) with 5‐FU resulted in a markedly increased CD133 expression, which we and others have recently shown to be an important functional liver CSC marker. This evidence concerns the gene AKT1 and hepatocellular carcinoma.
