Studies suggest that inflammation in periodontal tissues due to periodontitis increases secretion of different inflammatory cytokines, notably interleukin B (IL-1β), interleukin IL-6, interleukin 8 (IL-8), interleukin 17 (IL-17), and tumor necrosis factors alpha (TNF-α) [8, 10, 14–17]. The gene discussed is CXCL8; the disease is periodontitis.
