Though both schistosomiasis and allergic diseases such as asthma can stimulate a strong Th2-type immune response with elevated concentrations of IgE and eosinophilia, schistosome infection can also reduce the inflammation due to allergic asthma by modulating a variety of immune cells, cytokines and chemokines resulting in a decreased Th2 response. This evidence concerns the gene IGHE and asthma.
