KCNJ11 and hyperinsulinism: Permanent neonatal diabetes can be caused by mutations in INS and KCNJ11 genes, while other mutations in these genes will cause MODY10 and MODY13, respectively, with symptoms presenting only later in life; congenital hyperinsulinism can be caused by mutations in ABCC8, KCNJ11, GCK, HNF1A, and HNF4A genes, the same genes that, when harboring different mutations, cause MODY12, MODY13, MODY2, MODY3, and MODY1, respectively (9, 49, 50).
