The mechanistic differences in C. albicans-induced NETosis in vivo are not clear, but it is possible that, in the context of a local infection, in the absence of C. albicans opsonization, the Dectin-2/PAD4-dependent pathway is critical for NETosis (Wu et al., 2019), while a PAD4-independent mechanism leads to NET formation in systemic infection in which C. albicans must be exposed to serum opsonins (Guiducci et al., 2018). This evidence concerns the gene PADI4 and infection.
