Under oxidative or electrophilic stress condition, Nrf2 is released from Keap1 and translocates to the nucleus, where it forms a heterodimer with the small musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma (sMAF) proteins and binds to antioxidant response elements (AREs) in the promoter region of cytoprotective genes, triggering the transcription of Nrf2 target genes [5,6] (Figure 1).
