Survivin is detected in embryonic and foetal development [11], while it is rarely seen in healthy adult tissues, except placental tissue, bone marrow stem cells and testicular tissue [41], but it can be reactivated during the onset of most cancers, including breast [42] stomach [43,44,45], lung [14,46] colorectal [47], oral [48] and ovarian [49] etc. Furthermore, strong survivin expression has been demonstrated in the pancreas, esophagus, endometrium, uterine cervix, ovary, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, and neuroblastoma. This evidence concerns the gene BIRC5 and skin neoplasm.
