Further examination of his endocrine system revealed reduced serum levels of cortisol (3.3 μg/dL, normal range 6.2–19.4) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH 1.3 pg/mL, normal range 7.3–63.3), which suggested the presence of primary adrenal insufficiency despite normal levels of blood sugar, sodium and potassium.
