Interestingly, the gene that accumulates the largest number of HAR in the human genome is the neurodevelopmental transcription factor NPAS3 (Neuronal PAS domain-containing protein 3), a gene that has been associated with several neurological diseases in humans (Pickard et al., 2005, 2009; Macintyre et al., 2010).
