A high expression of ACE2 in type II alveolar cells enables a fast viral colonization, leading to a local alveolar wall destruction, with severe diffuse alveolar damage, implying migration of immune cells through the blood-air barrier contributing to complications of COVID-19 as venous thromboembolic disease and multiple-organ involvement (Huertas et al., 2020; Ortiz et al., 2020; Ziegler et al., 2020). The gene discussed is ACE2; the disease is venous thromboembolism.
