Although at present there are no specific agents approved for the treatment of NAFLD and its advanced forms, several potential agents have been widely investigated in the last decades, including glucose-lowering drugs (such as metformin, pioglitazone, GLP-1 receptor agonists, and sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors), statins and other lipid lowering therapies, anti-hypertensive drugs, and other possible agents, such as obeticholic acid. This evidence concerns the gene SLC5A2 and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.
