Notably, our analysis of the TCGA and stage III patients showed that iNOS is not associated with AKT activation or clinical outcomes in melanomas with loss of PTEN, likely due to the fact that iNOS appears to regulate the PI3K-AKT pathway through the formation of PTEN-SNO and inhibition of the lipid phosphatase activity of PTEN.
