Increased blood glucose is a risk factor for COVID-19 severity, however, a better comprehension of the impact of diabetes and insulin treatment will provide more information about the mechanisms behind the severity of COVID-19 patients, and in diabetic nephropathy where angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) circulating activity seems to be higher in both the early and late stages of the disease (32). This evidence concerns the gene ACE2 and diabetic kidney disease.
