MAPT and frontotemporal dementia: The aggregation of hyperphosphorylated forms of the axonal protein tau in the neuronal soma, forming neurofibrillary tangles, is a key pathological feature of AD, although tau inclusions in neurons or glial cells are also found in some non-AD neurodegenerative dementias, e.g., progressive supranuclear palsy and some forms of frontotemporal dementia [23].
