Though the direct role of fetuin A in the process of arteriosclerosis is not known, it is hypothesized that FA Ca-P complex (calcyprotein) interacts with cell membrane proteins — annexin II and VI — and inhibits transformation of vascular smooth vascular cells (VSMC) into osteoblast-like cells, and inhibits the function of bone morphogenetic protein 2 [6, 10, 12].
