It has been suggested that hypofibrinolysis in T2DM is associated with elevated levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) [15] and thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) [16], along with increased cross-linking of α2-antiplasmin into fibrin networks [8, 17], and glycation of fibrinogen [18] and plasminogen [19], while the mechanical properties of fibrin are independent from fibrinogen glycation [20]. This evidence concerns the gene SERPINE1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
