Given that NLRP3 activation has been strongly linked to memory impairment in Alzheimer's disease (Heneka et al., 2013; Daniels et al., 2016) and that NLRP3 is activated by zinc deficiency (Summersgill et al., 2014), we hypothesized that accelerated memory impairment in the APP/PS1 mice on the ZD diet is because of a periplaque nlrp3 response (Heneka et al., 2013; Daniels et al., 2016; Dempsey et al., 2017; Venegas et al., 2017; White et al., 2017). The gene discussed is NLRP3; the disease is Alzheimer disease.
