While CD38 protein abundance often increases with age and in other neurodegenerative diseases such as AD and PD (Dumitriu et al., 2016; Blacher et al., 2019; Guerreiro et al., 2020), the significant reduction of this pro-inflammatory protein is consistent with a non-inflammatory-mediated primary pathology in FXTAS.
