In that investigation, CXCL5 expression levels were elevated in co-cultures using bones derived from cancer-bearing mice compared to bones from healthy mice; it was also found that CXCL5 increased murine breast tumor cell proliferation under quiescent conditions and that the process was mediated through CXCR2, whereas factors derived from bones of healthy mice induced cancer cell quiescence (165).
