While exact mechanisms for preferential metastasis of lung cancer to bone are unclear, recent data implicate growth factors including TGF-beta [128], cytokines and chemokines such as stromal-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) and CXCR4 [129], and matrix metalloproteinases [129] that help drive lung cancer metastases to bone. This evidence concerns the gene CXCL12 and lung carcinoma.
