Placental hormones such as human placental lactogen and placental growth hormone upregulate the growth hormone/insulin like growth factor axis to promote nutrient transfer to the foetus and enable foetal growth, while oestrogen, progesterone and adipocyte-derived hormones, such as adiponectin, leptin, resistin, tumour necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein, are also suggested to play a role in the development of insulin resistance during pregnancy [2,4,5,6,7].
