Morpholino knockdown of dnmt2 (trdmt1) in zebrafish, resulted in mild microphthalmia, retinal lamination defects, RPE malformation, and reduced expression of retinal cell type markers like atoh7, neurod, and zash1a, suggesting that DNA methylation may be involved in the differentiation of retinal neurons [115]. This evidence concerns the gene TRDMT1 and microphthalmia.
